IMPORTANCE OF PROPHYLAXIS: DENTAL CLEANING

By Elizabeth Manguino ·

Even with adequate brushing, flossing and mouthwash daily, our mouth can accumulate tartar and plaque which, if not removed properly, can irritate the gum tissue, cause periodontal disease, cavities, among other complications.

To maintain your oral health and avoid more serious problems, it is important to make regular visits to the dentist, at least every 6 months, for dental cleaning (dental prophylaxis).

How is tartar formed?

Even though we clean our teeth every day, food debris and bacteria can form a film that lodges on the teeth and gums. When this film is not removed, it mineralizes under the action of saliva and forms dental tartar.

Why do dental cleaning in the office?

Dentists have extensive knowledge about oral health, as well as specific equipment to clean teeth well. It may seem simple, but it involves a few steps. Check it out:

– Supragingival scaling: scraping to remove accumulated tartar;

– Blasting: application of sodium bicarbonate with a jet, aiming to remove tartar remains, together with bacterial plaque;

– Complete brushing;

– Application of fluoride to replace minerals and protect teeth.

Schedule frequent visits to the dentist and keep your teeth clean and healthy!
