Tooth Whitening

White teeth are generally associated with health, beauty and youth. There is nothing more beautiful than a smile with white teeth.

Dr. Elizabeth tells us a little more about teeth whitening. Dental Clinic Specializing in Teeth Whitening in SP South Zone.

The passage of time and eating habits developed throughout our lives leave marks on our teeth. Tobacco, coffee, wine and Age itself causes the smile to take on a yellowish, stained and fatally unpleasant appearance. Whitening has the function of remove the atypical coloration of tooth enamel, making teeth lighter.

How It Works

Although the chemistry of the bleaching process is complex, the vast majority of products work through oxidation, which removes the stain by oxygen release and mechanical cleaning action.

Hydrogen peroxide, the main active component of almost all whitening products, comes into contact with the tooth and is highly unstable, it decomposes into two byproducts: water (H2O) and nascent oxygen (O-). The oxygen resulting from this reaction is responsible for the whitening itself.

Due to its low molecular weight, it has a high power to penetrate the porosities of tooth enamel, leaving them more wide and degrading the pigment molecules, making them smaller, poorly pigmented and even colorless.

Until recently, halogen, xenohalogen, laser lights and more recently LED lamps were used. However, the latest Scientific research shows that lights can produce pulp changes, leading to possible inflammation and sensitivity.

Currently, the newest whitening gels do not require the use of light because they are self-activated. They work by penetrating the inside of the tooth through osmolarity releasing nascent oxygen that promotes whitening, as explained above. This way the whitening is more long-lasting and is not harmful to the dental pulp.
